Laser Scanning Vs. Lidar Services

With the definition of the two technologies, it’s very easy to think that the two technologies are the same thing. Though, there exist a couple more differences.

	Laser technology	LIDAR Technology
Definition	A laser is a device that uses laser technology to emit light through a process. It is widely known as optical amplification. The functionality of such a technology is also widely known with many applications being in the drilling area and the medical area.	Lidar is a method that is specifically used for surveying services. It measures the distance to a predetermined target. This is actually facilitated by its ability to illuminate the target with laser light.
Light amplification	A device to emit coherent radiation.	A technique or a process of emitting radiation.
Beam use	Laser is what the beams are called.	Utilizes laser beams from laser technology. It’s what facilitates the whole process of detection analysis and tracking purposes.
Area coverage	Used to illuminate a large area.	Illuminates a very specific target.
Usage	Laser technology is used in a couple of ways. The first and the main users are in surgical procedures including LASIK eye surgery. They are also used for cutting, drilling, and making several materials.	Used to establish atmospheric constituents, solid objects, the distance of objects, and many other things.
When the technology was coined	Came into place in the 60s. Robert N. Hall was the first person to come up with a close representation of this technology.	At least 30 years old. It came to practice in the early 90s.

Scanning in general is a very helpful process for 3D projects. And as shown above, laser and lidar scans have very different area coverage.

If you are just giving a more generalized view of your project, then laser scanning is the way to go. 

But if you are aiming for a more detailed approach, lidar technology is best suited for you.
