People are usually drawn to specially-abled pets. We get this feeling of wanting to help and make sure they get a chance at a normal life. That desire to help manifests as prosthetics.
Clips of pets with artificial limbs have been circulating the internet. It has become a whole new genre of feel-good videos of its own. A cat with bionic hind legs. A tortoise with wheels. All these videos of hope for a normal life. These smudges of feel-good optimism all started by the 3D printing industry.
3D2GO is no different. Our end-to-end services for all things 3D include the wellbeing of your furry babies. Our printed prosthetics can be made lightweight, and infinitely customizable for the comfort of your pets.
Dog prosthetics and rehabilitation
People believe that dogs have three legs and a spare. In some way, it is true. Dogs easily adapt back to normality even after losing a limb. But complications can arise even with the success of their adaptability. In older dogs and dogs with arthritis or other mobility issues, putting extra weight on the remaining limbs can cause bigger problems in the long run. Mainly, it impacts their spinal mobility. Dogs would have to change the range of motion in their existing limbs. They have to pull themselves and keep moving in ways that are very unnatural.
With the help of prosthetics, the range of motion can be restored. Prosthetic and the proper rehab is the perfect solution for this. Prosthetic, even for humans, is just plastic. It does nothing unless partnered with the right exercise and treatment.
Human vs. Dog Prosthetics
Animal prosthetics have to be individually tailored just like those with humans. It means factoring in the animal’s size, weight, height, stance, breed, and gait. Thus orthopedists study your pets’ movements. After getting enough information on this, they would try to mold a limb that will sync up with the others.
The standard process is to make a plaster cast. This is already the first step to 3D printing as well.
- First up is to design the prosthetic based on photos and video.
- Then build it out with durable thermoplastics and metal.
- From there, they tweak the finer details by hand until it works with the animal.
The process can take weeks because there’s also the matter of the amount of the limb that needs replacing. If the whole limb is gone and there’s no obvious point to attach a prosthetic, it could get much trickier.
3D2GO cares for your furry friends!
3D printing has long been hailed as a manufacturing revolution. Therefore, we know that it is the solution to full-limb replacement.
Here at 3D2GO, we are equipped with the right software to build the 3D models. Through the software, we are able to simulate how a 3D model might function with the animal. Our designers can stress test and map movements of the limb before ever printing it out. Our process is similar to building standard orthopedics. So you can rest assured that your animals will be treated with the right medical care.
