Exploring your resourcefulness with a 3d printed toy car

People will recycle if they can make money doing so. This is one way to discipline and teach your kids. They get to save up for themselves while saving mother earth. 

Some of the commonly recycled materials are:

• cans
• bottles
• metal
• glass 
• plastic

But the incentives have been weaker for recycling plastic. Because of this, technologies have matured. 3D printing, to be exact,  allows people to recycle waste plastic. The recycled plastic could be used to make a variation of things including toys for your boys. This approach is called distributed recycling and additive manufacturing (DRAM).

DRAM method starts with plastic waste. Sort and wash the plastic with soap and water. Running it under the dishwasher is also an easier option. Once cleaned, it is to be ground into particles. Grounding plastic has two ways.

• Cross-cut paper/CD shredder for small amounts
• Open-source plans for an industrial waste plastic granulator for bigger amounts

The grounded material will then be converted into a 3D printer filament. A 3D printable recyclebot is used in this step. It’s a device that turns ground plastic into spaghetti-like filaments. These filaments from recyclebots are relatively cheaper than those of commercial filaments. The pandemic has been interrupting global supply chains. Thus, making products at home from waste is even more appealing.

Are there other ways to self-print 3d printed toy soldiers and other plastic printed objects?

Indeed, there is. You can skip the step of making filament. Instead, use fused particle fabrication. This directly 3D-prints granulated waste plastic into products. It is most amenable to large products on larger printers. But they can also be used on smaller-scale printers. 

DRAM method and fused particle fabrication can convert any plastic waste into toy soldiers, or even cars.
