Why Opt For A 3D Printed Cast
Why Opt For A 3D Printed Cast

Why choose a 3d printed arm cast

A 3D printed cast, or an orthopedic cast, is often made from plaster. It encases a limb or portion of the body to help keep it structurally stable to allow it to heal. Often in instances of bone fractures or breaks. Although these plaster-based casts are effective in healing broken bones, they possess several limitations. Aside from the fact that these casts are unpleasant to look at and are extremely uncomfortable to wear, other limitations exist:

  • The limb is unreachable during treatment, causing the skin under the cast to become dry and uncomfortable. Since the limb is covered by the cast, the area under the plaster cannot be cleaned and can sometimes result in an infection or rash.
  • The plaster casts can be of considerable weight, which may result in restricted or uncomfortable movement.
  • Plaster casts are also not waterproof and will break down if wet, interrupting the healing process.

3D printed casts are able to address the above-mentioned limitations while providing additional benefits based on the designs.

Customizing your 3d printed wrist cast

Prosthetics have to be individually tailored. It means factoring in the size, weight, height, stance, and body part. Thus orthopedists study your movements. After getting enough information on this, they would try to mold a limb that will sync up with the others.

The standard process is to make a plaster cast. This is already the first step to 3D printing as well.

  1. First up is to design the prosthetic based on photos and video.
  2. Then build it out with durable thermoplastics and metal.
  3. From there, they tweak the finer details by hand until it works with the animal.

The process can take weeks because there’s also the matter of the amount of the limb that needs replacing. If the whole limb is gone and there’s no obvious point to attach a prosthetic, it could get much trickier.

With the help of prosthetics, the range of motion can be restored. Prosthetic and proper rehab is the perfect solution for this. Prosthetic is just plastic. It does nothing unless partnered with the right exercise and treatment.

Approaches to how we solve medical problems are constantly evolving. New gear and gadgets are being invented to better our health and well-being. One of the most revolutionary change is the use of 3D printing in the medical field.

From prosthetics, medical, even those who are still in practice. All take advantage of 3D services.

Prosthetics are very expensive and it takes a long time to make one. However, with the help of 3D printing technology, it’s more accessible today.

From prosthetics, medical, even those who are still in practice. All take advantage of 3D services.

Here at 3D2GO, we are equipped with the right software to build the 3D models. Through the software, we are able to simulate how a 3D model might function with the rest of the body. Our designers can stress test and map movements of the limb before printing it out. Our process is similar to building standard orthopedics. So you can rest assured that you will be treated with the right medical care.
